Former University of Nairobi student leader Chrispus Fwamba has declared interest in the Nairobi governorship.
In 2013, Fwamba commonly known as Fwamba NC Fwamba was the running mate for the late Mutinda Khavemba on a Wiper ticket. The seat was won by Dr Evans Kidero on an ODM ticket, who is currently seeking to succeed Cyprian Awiti as Homa Bay governor. Kidero lost to Mike Sonko in 2017.
Yesterday, Fwamba said he will vie for the seat on Jubilee Party. “I have done politics all my time in the city and at the UoN where I studied and I believe that I understand well issues affecting Nairobians and am ready to solve them,” he said.
He promised a modern drainage system across the city to mitigate the floods menace. “It is through a good drainage system that roads will last long,” he said.
Fwamba pledged bursaries to orphans and children of widows and widowers. He also promised to protect residents in informal settlements against displacement by land grabbers.
Aspirants in the Nairobi governor race include the incumbent Ann Kananu, businesswoman Agnes Kagure, Senator Johnson Sakaja, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and president of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Richard Ngatia.
Fwamba was an advisor to Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa when he was in the Devolution ministry where he handled the Kenya Devolution Support Programme.
He said he was one of the key strategists of the Jubilee Party during the 2017 elections. “I was among the strategists for President Uhuru Kenyatta under the Mbele Iko Sawa lobby where we traversed the country campaigning for him,” he said.
In 2004, after the election of Mathare MP George Wanjohi was nullified by the Court of Appeal, Fwamba unsuccessfully vied for the seat in the by-election.
He noted that when he served as a student leader at the university together with other officials they agitated for the increase of Higher Education Loans Board allocation for students.
“If elected governor, I will push for a law in the city to encourage and promote rainwater harvesting to address persistent water shortage,” said Fwamba.
Fwamba was among a group of voters who filed a suit seeking to have the election of former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Alex ole Magelo nullified after the 2013 election.
They filed the case at the Milimani Commercial Court in Nairobi and were granted permission to file a suit against the Transitional Authority and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The Transition Authority is the body that oversees the devolvement of power and services from the central government to the county governments.
They wanted the Authority’s decision to order for the election of the Speaker quashed on the ground that they were unconstitutional.
