General Defao dead at 62

The Congolese legend died on Monday evening.

Popular Congolese musician Lulendo Matumona, popularly known as General Defao, has died.

According to his family who confirmed the news, he died on Monday evening in Douala, Cameroon, where he had gone to perform over the festive period. It is reported that his health had been in decline but the exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

Defao was born on December 31, 1959 and began his musical career in 1976 at the age of 17 when he joined the Grand Zaϊko Wawa orchestra. He quickly gained critical acclaim and fame for his unique voice and talent as well as his large frame.

With a successful career in hand in the 1990s, General Defao left his country in the early 2000s to settle in Kenya.

Defao was 62 at the time of his death.
