Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has revealed that just like many Kenyans she was caught unawares when she saw President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga shaking hands at the doorsteps of Harambee House on 9th March 2018.
At first, the county boss says she could not believe her eyes and thought the two were in a function.
Speaking today during a forum in which President Kenyatta’s allies from Mt Kenya region have endorsed the former Prime Minister for the State House job in Nakuru, Waiguru explained that she was not happy.
“When I saw them (Uhuru and Raila), I didn’t understand first. I thought maybe I was hearing my things as the two leaders detained why they were brokering a political truce,” she said in front of Raila.
“Actually, I really cried and cried. This was something I never saw coming.”
However, after a few days, she was in touch with reality and embraced the ‘Handshake’.
“I realised they had good intentions and the only option was to join the bandwagon.”
But first, she had to do something – make peace with the ODM leader.
Waiguru had sued the ex-Premier for linking her to the loss of millions of shillings at the National Youth Service (NYS).
“Besides the main Handshake, I had to do one with the former Prime Minister because you know we were not friends. I withdrew the court case and today I believe he is the right man to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta,” she said.
Accept Raila
The former Devolution Cabinet Secretary implored the Mt Kenya bloc to support Raila’s presidential candidature in the 2022 General Elections.
She remarked that the former Prime Minister had what it takes to become the next President, as he has fought for the country’s democracy.
“I want to urge our people to consider Raila as the best presidential candidate. His intentions are just pure. We have he has massive support across the country, but he needs our votes.
“All indications show he will be the next President. If you fail to vote for him, you will join the opposition and that’s not where we belong,” Waiguru said.
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, who was the host, and his Laikipia counterpart Nderitu Mureithi also endorsed Raila for the top seat.
