Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has purchased hand washing jerricans worth 50 Billion in an effort to combat the COVID-19 crisis in the country.
While addressing reporters during the jerrican’s launch she said that, that is the very first step towards keeping away the deadly Virus.
The embattled Governor said that the jerricans will be distributed across the county to help Kirinyaga residents wash their hands regularly and prevent the spread of COVID-19 that has now affected more than 170 Kenyans.
“These jerricans will be distrusted to households and businesses across Kirinyaga and everyone must ensure that they wash their hands properly.” She said
Waiguru also said that her county government is intending to purchase large quantities of sanitizers in few weeks to help implement the COVID-19 safety measures.
“We are in partnership with the National Government to get more sanitizes that will be put at strategic places within Kirnyaga.” She said
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, sales of hand sanitizers have soared. It’s become such a sought-after product that pharmacies and supermarkets have either hiked prices or are limiting amounts a customer can purchase at any one time.
Governor Waiguru has also warned those Kirinyaga residents selling fake hand sanitizers that they will be arrested and prosecuted.
“Though hand sanitizers can help reduce our risk of catching certain infections, not all hand sanitizers are equally effective against coronavirus. We have noted with a lot of concerns those selling fake had sanitizers.” Waiguru Said
Medical evidence also suggests that even hand sanitizers containing 60% alcohol cannot remove all types of germs.
Studies have found that hand washing is more effective than hand sanitizers at removing norovirus, Cryptosporidium (a parasite that can cause diarrhoea), and Clostridium difficile (bacteria which cause bowel problems and diarrhoea).
Washing with warm water and soap remains the gold standard for hand hygiene and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Washing with warm water (not cold water) and soap removes oils from the hands that can harbour microbes.
Waiguru urged to maintain high hygiene and regularly wash hands to avert the spread of Coronavirus.
“This will go a long way in mitigating the spread of Covid-19 in the country,” stated Waiguru.
