The Government of Kenya has ordered all Civil servants to take the Covid-19 jab before 23rd August, 2021.

In a letter to all Principal Secretaries, Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua said that those who will fail to do so will face disciplinary action.

Kinyua noted there is low uptake of vaccines among civil servants, especially teachers and those in the security sector.

According to him, some workers avoid the jab to stay away from work affecting public service delivery.

“It was observed that some public servants have deliberately avoided getting vaccinated so that they can stay away from work under the guise of working from home. This has negatively affected service delivery to the public,” said Kinyua.

“It has therefore been decided that all civil servants will be prioritized in the ongoing vaccination exercise and that those who will not have been given the 1st jab by August 23, 2021, be treated as discipline cases and appropriate action against them.”

According to the Ministry of Health statistics, as of August 8th, 1,804,375 had been vaccinated across the country. Of these, the total first doses are 1,105,470, while the second doses are 698,905.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 63.2 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent and females at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.6 per cent.

So far, 120,155 health workers, 102,007 teachers, 56,219 security officers, 214722 aged 58 years and above, and 205,802 others have received the jab.
