‘Hata Serikali Yako Iko na Wezi,’ Ruto Tells Off Uhuru on Boda Boda Crackdown

Deputy President William Ruto has opposed the ongoing crackdown on the boda boda sector, saying it is evil and malicious.

Speaking a day after returning to Kenya from his 10-day trip in the United Kingdom and the United States, the DP asked President Uhuru Kenyatta why he was harassing the entire sector.

The Head of State ordered a crackdown after rogue boda boda riders were caught on camera assaulting a female motorist along Forest Road in Nairobi.

The riders attacked the woman, who is a Zimbabwean diplomat after she hit one of their own. She was groped and virtually stripped naked.

As a result, the President was angry and called for the arrest of boda boda riders flouting traffic rules.

He added that the issue would be politicised and he was right.

His deputy is now defending the operators in the business, arguing that most of them are disciplined.

The second in command wondered why the government could not deal with the miscreants and leave the others to do continue with the business.

“All sectors in the country have rogue people and not only in the boda boda industry. Punishing the whole sector is wrong,” he said.

He added that the Jubilee government has so many rogue people yet they have not been arrested or condemned.

“You don’t find crooks only in the boda boda sector, even the government of Kenya has rogue and corrupt individuals. A lot of Covid-19 funds were looted by the government officials, why did the President order a crackdown or dissolve the government,” he posed.

In the last three days, police and riders have been engaging in running battles.

Hundreds of boda boda operators are in police custody while others have been presented in court and fined for breaking traffic rules.
