Three terror suspects who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison Monday have been arrested.
The three; Musharaf Abdalla alias Alex Shikanda, Joseph Juma Odhiambo and Mohammed Ali Abikar who escaped under unclear circumstances were arrested in Mwingi East as they approached Ukasi.
According to reports, the three inmates were en route to Somalia via Boni Forest.
Locals spotted the three jailbirds and alerted authorities who mounted intense patrol around the area.
Locals said they saw the three men at the Malalani shopping center and were suspicious that they could be the wanted terror prisoners who escaped jail on Sunday night.
The three, who appeared fatigued and thirsty, were alleged to have purchased a large quantity of milk, bottled water, bread, and biscuits from nearby stores and paid with cash.
“They appeared confused and lost, unaware of the geography around them. They were asking how they can connect to the Garissa or Tana River counties from the area,” said a trader.
When the strangers asked for directions to Boni Forest, the residents got even more suspicious.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations had placed a huge reward of Ksh 60 million, Ksh 20 million each to anyone with information that may lead to their arrest.
Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga alias Zarkawi was arrested on 30th September 2012, over his participation in a failed attempt to conduct a terrorist attack targeting Parliament Buildings.
Zarkawi hails from Ekero area of Mumias in Kakamega County.
“He was charged with possession of explosives, ammunition and firearms.” the DCI said
Mohamed Ali Abikar on the other hand was involved in the Garissa University attack on 2nd April 2015, according to the police.
The third convict, Joseph Juma Odhiambo alias Yusuf was arrested on 21st November 2019 at Bulla Hawa in Somalia while attempting to enlist with the Al-Shabaab.
Following the Kamiti ‘Prison Break’, President Uhuru Kenyatta Wednesday sacked Kenya Prisons Service Commissioner-General Wycliffe Ogallo and appointed Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba to replace him.
He also directed the State Department of Correctional Services to sanction disciplinary action against all Kenya Prisons Service personnel who were on duty when the security breaches occurred.
