From earning a paltry Ksh12,000 a month to making Ksh500,000 a day.

Award-winning gospel artiste Shiru wa GP was working as tea girl and cleaner at Wilson Airport in Nairobi when she composed a song dubbed Agiginyani (those who never give up). But she did not have money to record the song. Her husband was a watchman.

She resorted to asking her church to fundraise for her so that she could go to the studio and release the song. Since she was in the choir and church members knew she had a talent, they did the fundraiser and raised Ksh10,000. She also took a loan from her employer to enable her to release a whole album.

Eventually, Agiginyani was recorded and released. It was not an instant hit and since she did not know how to do marketing, she continued making tea.

“One day I received a call from an owner of a music shop in Nairobi. She told me that she wanted 200 VCDs of the Agiginyani album. I asked my producer to help me get 200 copies.

“When I went to supply the VCDs, I learnt that my song was already popular without me knowing. I sold the 200 copies for Ksh100 each and within a short time, I made my first Ksh20,00,” she recalled during an interview on Kameme TV.

That was the beginning of her career. Together with the husband, they resigned and started supplying VCDs in various parts of the country.

She hired five cars to help in the distribution.

“At that time, there were no online video sharing platforms such as YouTube, hence VCDs were the only option for many people. Since my song was playing in all Kikuyu radio stations, selling the VCDs was not an issue.

“I wound make between Ksh400,000 and Ksh600,000 in a single day. This felt like a dream. A couple that was living from hand to mouth was making millions in a week,” she said.

When she opened her first account with Equity Bank, the financial institution summoned her after a few days of noticing that she was depositing huge amounts of money in a day and yet she was not withdrawing.

“My husband and I did not know what to do with the money we had because the transition was so fast. Within a few months, we had pooled Ksh10 million.”

Now that life had changed, they bought land and built their house, and purchased their own cars to help in the distribution of her music.

But the time came, they lost almost everything.

She had been without a child for nine years. When the Lord visited her, she conceived twins.

However, in the seventh month, she collapsed and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital. The doctors said the babies had to be delivered through the CS.

“The babies – a boy and a girl – were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The medics told us their chances of survival were minimal,” she said.

The singer explained that the hospital bill was ballooning every day and after exhausting all the savings, they sold almost everything. But when they were in the process of selling their house, her plight was highlighted by a radio station. Her fans, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, chipped in and cleared the bill for her.

Unfortunately, she infected both children with TB and lost the boy.

Today, the couple has established itself again. They ran a production firm and a music school.
