Persuasion. Perception. Propaganda. These are the three main ingredients that shape politics in any election.

With the 2022 presidential election fast approaching, political spin doctors are burning the midnight to market their candidates, trying to test and employ the most effective methods.

Beyond doubt, the 2022 State House contest pits Deputy President William Ruto against ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The former Prime Minister is seen as the compromise candidate after Dr. Ruto fell from grace.

Actors of the so-called deep state and system have been creating an atmosphere of Raila’s presidency

Key in the agenda is to groom the opposition chief as a statesman. This is fashioned to erase the “old Raila” who was always known to lament every season before an election.

Strikingly, this scheme seems to be working as the DP is the one grumbling and accusing the State of trying to fix him and eventually rig him out.

When this happens, the strategists want the voters to believe that the camp that is complaining has sensed defeat.

The architects of these game plans have also been selling the AU Special Envoy as a leader and the second in command as “dealer”.

Through State bloggers, they paint Ruto as corrupt, arguing that most of the politicians allied to him have been arraigned over graft and other criminal activities. I know you must have heard about Alibaba and the 40 thieves.

The support of the business community has also been used to advance the Raila agenda. It is believed that any candidate backed by Mt Kenya billionaires always wins the presidency.

Further, the “deep state” is projecting a Raila win in the first round, arguing that his support around the country is massive.

Recently, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria revealed that State bureaucrats build such perceptions to market their preferred candidate.

In the run-up to the 2013 General Election, controversial political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi coined the infamous “tyranny of numbers”. Ideally, this narrative was designed to make Kenyans presume that you cannot defeat a person supported by the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.

There is an anonymous proverb that says: “In Africa, don’t concentrate much on the votes if you don’t know who will count.”
