Deputy President William Ruto is on the spot after workers at one of his farms downed tools on Monday morning over unpaid wages.

The casual labourers working at Kisimi Farm in Taita Taveta claimed that they had not been paid for six weeks.

The angry hustlers protested outside the farm’s gate, accusing the management of failing to listen to them.

Alex Saidi, one of the protesters, said they were tired of empty promises and vowed sustain their strike until the dues are released.

“We see that business is going on well and the company is not facing any financial crisis. We will not return to work until our salaries are paid,” he said, as quoted by the Nation.

They particularly singled out a manager identified as Arie Dempers and faulted him their escalating woes.

“He tells us that if we don’t want to work we should leave. He is very hostile to the workers,” Fred Mashauri said.

The workers get paid between Ksh300 and Ksh500 every day. They also want their wages raised, noting that the hard economic times had pushed them against the wall.

The 1000-acre Kisima Farm grows maize and rears cattle.

Dr Ruto has been promising to help the common man (hustlers) rewrite their stories if elected President in August.

The DP, who claims that he started from nothing a built an empire worth billions of shillings, insists that he can use his personal experience to change the lives of ordinary Kenyans.

Critics, however, argue that the second in command is just taking advantage of unfortunate situation of the downtrodden to advance selfish interests.
