A week after Deputy President William Ruto mockingly addressed Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, the trade unionist has fired back.

While receiving Atwoli’s ex-wife, Roselinda Simiyu, in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the second in command said: “Huyu ni bibi ya yule mzee wa nyororo (she is the wife of the old man who likes putting on chains).

Speaking during a presidential function in Mombasa, the veteran workers’ activist called out the DP for making “unfunny jokes” about him.

He asked Dr. Ruto should respect him because he qualifies to be his father.

“Ruto was born in 1966 just when I completed finished Form Four. During those days, Form Four leavers were grown men and I know I could have been Ruto’s father, but I missed the chance,” he said.

Atwoli went on to claim that the DP was attacking him out of frustration.

“He knows he will not win the presidency and that’s why he is taunting everyone opposed to him. I urge his neighbours in Sugoi to cut all trees because this boy might hang himself after losing the August presidential election,” he claimed.

The remarks resulted in a flood of commentary on social media platforms, as netizens gave their reactions.

The UDA party through Ruto’s presidential campaign Director of Communications, Hussein Mohammed, gave the trade unionist a dressing-down for making funs of suicide when dozens of Kenyans have taken their own lives due to economic hardships.

“The remarks by the ‘ancient campaign expert’ Francis Atwoli are completely unnecessary and go against the tenets of democracy. For Kenyans inflicted with violence and death including in the context of elections, this is not a laughing matter.

“Some 483 suicide cases were recorded between the months of April and June 2021. A report linked the rise in cases to mental illnesses caused by a breakdown of social-economic safeguards,” Hussein said in a statement.

But some social media said the wheelbarrow party should not act like the DP and his troops have not been insulting people during their political meetings.
