Captain Ruth Karuri, who earned significant global recognition after landing a KQ100 Boeing 787 passenger plane amidst storm Eunice at Heathrow Airport, UK, on February 20, has disclosed his educational background.

Speaking to a local daily, the mother of three said that she is a form four leaver who failed to get a chance at the university but bagged a life-changing opportunity to train with the national airliner without taking any undergraduate course.

“I am a form four leaver. With the kind of experience I have, I can do a master’s degree without doing an undergraduate course. It’s not a bad thing to get a degree, but it is not the end of the world if you do not have one.” She said.

Further, Ruth recounted that during her training, the trainers treated her with contempt after discovering that she can’t even ride a bicycle.

Determined to prove them wrong, she gave her all at the training to become one of the best female pilots in the world.

“When we went to Adis Ababa for training, we were being taught by ex-military pilots. I was asked if I knew how to ride a bicycle, and I said no.

The trainer told me I can never fly a plane. I thought my dreams had come to an end.

After that, I learned how to fly. I came and learned how to drive a car, and I have asked my son to teach me how to ride a bike.”

Ruth is a wife to Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karuri, a former pilot. Her husband has recently thrown his hat into politics, and he is one of the aspirants seeking the Kasarani parliamentary seat.

Ruth is among 40 accredited female pilots in Kenya.
