They are neighbours who do not see eye to eye. Their political rivalry is turning out to be personal rather than ideological.

Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary and Laikipia Woman Rep Cate Waruguru have had a sour relationship in recent months after declaring interest in the Laikipia East parliamentary seat. Kiunjuri served as the area MP from 1997 to 2013.

Waruguru is eyeing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket while Kiunjuri will be sponsored by The Service Party (TSP), which he founded.

But what has been accentuated in their campaigns is not what they will do if elected. Marriage and love issues have taken prominence.

A few days ago, Kiunjuri described Waruguru as a husband snatcher. Alluding that she was immoral, the TSP leader cautioned the residents against voting a “bad role model” to girls and young women.

In a rejoinder, Waruguru clapped back at the former Cabinet Minister, telling him to stop meddling in the affairs of her personal life.

“Kiunjuri should know that I choose the type of men I want to date and I have never imagined him being my partner. Please tell him to avoid taking that route because I will expose him badly,” she said.

In recent years, the Woman Rep has been roped in love scandals, the most recent being last year when a woman accused her of eloping with her husband.

The first-time lawmaker said Kiunjuri should be the last person talking about immorality.

“This man is rotten. I have so many stories about him going to Koinange street (Kenya’s prostitution den). Also, if I start to list the number of children he has fathered with different women and abandoned them, you will be shocked,” she alleged.

In addition, Waruguru claimed that he has nothing to show for the 15 years he served as MP.

“The people did not feel his impact when he was their leader. He focused on making money and forgot his people. Now he wants to use the money he made to bribe voters. He is a dealer, not a leader.

Clearly, this will be an epic battle and one to watch in the run-up to the August General Election.
