The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has called for stakeholder engagements between critical actors involved in the general election to address voter apathy.

The low turnout threatens to deny the commission the 4.5 million new voters targetted in the second and final phase of the voter registration exercise.

Speaking in Marsabit, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the commission has noted with great concern the lack of interest among eligible new voters to register as voters and exercise their civic duty

The electoral body had targeted to register around 6 million new voters from October 4th  to November 2nd last year.

However, by the end of the period, the commission managed to register only 1.4 million new voters missing its target by 4.6 million.

With only five days left to the end of the exercise that began on January 17, 2022, the electoral body is likely to miss its target.

By Monday this week, the electoral body had only managed a quarter of its proposed target by registering 548,000 new voters.

Chebukati however assured that the commission is committed to delivering free, fair and credible elections on 9th August.
