IG Mutyambai Directs DCI to Restart Agnes Wanjiru’s Murder Case

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has acted in response to the murder case involving 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru who was reportedly killed by a British soldier in Nanyuki in 2012.

Through his Twitter account, the IG said that he had requested the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to commence thorough investigations that would see all parties involved charged with murder.

“I have directed the DCI to re-open the case and compile all the available evidence and witness accounts and ensure the case is concluded before a court of law. I am also urging the UK government to collaborate with us to conclude the case and administer justice,” Mutyambai stated.

The UK government has expressed their concern in investigating the case as they have since asked the Kenyan authorities to submit the DNA samples concerning Wanjiru’s murder.

“DNA had been formally requested in relation to the Wanjiru case by the Kenyans only last week, which of course we are responding to. We had never received the request,” Ben Wallace, UK Secretary of State for Defence told The Times.

Wanjiru’s murder dates back to nearly a decade ago. Her body was found in a septic tank at the Lion’s Court Inn Hotel in Nanyuki on March 31, 2012. Three months after partying with five British soldiers attached to the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK).

It is reported that Kenyan detectives on June 20, 2012, had requested the UK Government, through an official letter, to present the DNA samples of the soldiers who were in the hotel that fateful night, but it failed to give a response.

Wanjiru’s murder case comes at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to meet UK Prime Minister Borris Johnson to sign a five-year deal that seeks to promote regional security. A military source has disclosed that the deal also entails the protection of British soldiers from being charged with murder in Kenya.
