The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has concluded investigations into the recent slaying of two brothers in Embu County and forwarded the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for action.
In a statement dated 16th August, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori recommended the immediate suspension of the six officers suspected to have been involved in the killing.
Makori also asked that the officers surrender any government stores in their possession, including firearms.
“Besides murder, the authority is pursuing other charges including negligence in the performance of duty that may have been committed by any other officers,” Makori said.
In another statement, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, directed Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to arrest and arraign the six suspects in Nairobi.
The DPP said the move is to avoid interference with evidence and intimidation of witnesses as IPOA finalises its investigations.
“For that reason, and keeping in view the urgency of this matter, we expect to receive results of all investigations not later than close of business today, August 16, 2021,” read part of the DPP’s statement.
IG Mutyambai has assured Kenyans that justice will be served for the Kianjokoma brothers.
During his weekly segment on Twitter #EngageTheIG, Mutyambai said that the investigation had been concluded and action would soon be taken.
“Good morning, first, my sincere condolences to the Kianjokama family. IPOA has concluded investigations into the matter and forwarded the file to the DPP for action. Meanwhile, all the officers involved have been suspended with immediate effect to pave the way for prosecution,” said Mutyambai.
“I assure you that justice for the Kianjokoma brothers will be served, but this can only be done if we allow the proper due process to take place with concrete evidence that can stand a trial in the court of justice,” he added.
Benson Njiru, 22, and his brother, Emmanuel Mutura, 19, were arrested for allegedly flouting the 10 pm-4 am curfew on Sunday, 1st August , outside their family shop in Kianjokoma shopping centre.
The two siblings lost their lives at the hands of police officers from Manyatta Police Station in Embu County.
