The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the incident in which a police officer killed his wife and five other people before committing suicide in the Kabete area, Nairobi.

According to the police report, Constable Benson Imbatu who returned home with his AK47 rifle picked up an argument with his wife, Carol Imbatu before shooting and killing her.

Imbatu shot five other people who included neighbours and bodaboda riders who had rushed to his house to check what had happened when they heard gunshots.

Two other people who were critically injured in the shooting were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Hours after the Tuesday morning incident IPOA dispatched its Rapid Response team to obtain information that may be relevant in unveiling the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.

According to IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori, Section 25 of the IPOA Act, dictates that deaths and injuries occasioned by actions of the police be investigated by the Authority, regardless of whether the officer involved is dead or alive.

“Upon conclusion of the investigations, the Authority will make appropriate recommendations to relevant institutions,” added Makori.

IPOA has further urged police officers to fully explore mechanisms of addressing issues that affect their work.

This includes lodging complaints with IPOA through toll-free number 1559 besides also regularly utilising counselling services provided by the National Police Service Commission.
