Jeff Bezos’ wealth soars to KSh 17.1 trillion, topping pre-divorce rec

Billionaire businessman Jeff Bezos’ net worth has surpassed its previous peak, setting a new record for the world’s richest man.

According to Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Bezos’ fortune now stands at over KSh 17 trillion, topping his previous high of KSh 16.7 trillion (US$167.7 billion), which was set on September 4, 2018.

Bezos had relinquished a quarter of his stake in Amazon as part of a divorce settlement in 2019.

The Amazon boss ended his 25 years marriage with MacKenzie after court finalised what was described as one of the world’s most expensive divorce cases.

He retained 12% stake valued at KSh 11.48 trillion (US$114.8 billion) and remained the world’s richest man alive despite the costly divorce.

His now ex-wife MacKenzie acquired a new status in the world billionaires’ club and consequently became the 22nd richest person on earth, thanks to the windfall from the divorce.

Amazon, however, declined to comment on its founder’s wealth.

In a related report by TUKO.co.ke, Bezos was ranked among the top 10 richest men of all time in the world, coming at number nine.

Bezos is the founder of Amazon. The American industrialist was born on January 12, 1964. As of May 2020, his net worth staggered at US$147.4 billion.
