Former world javelin champion Julius Yego failed to make the final in the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday morning, 4th August, after missing the qualifying mark of 83.50 metres.
The Rio Olympics silver medalist finished 24th in the qualifiers with a seasonal best of 77.34 metres.
Taking to social media, the 34-year-old admitted that this was not his best performance and promised to bounce back in the 2024 Olympics Games.
“Not the best result I expected but I am really very excited and happy I competed in this Olympics. It’s been a rough road with Covid-19 lockdowns and travel ban, meaning we had little time for training,” said Yego.
“The opening up of the country in May gave us hope of competing in yet another major championship, the Tokyo 2020, which had to be postponed last year. It was an unprecedented season.”
Despite the poor result, Yego was happy to have been capped three times as an Olympian.
“Looking forward to the 2022 World Championship next year. Being able to compete was a bonus today, having not been sure till this morning that my bicep would move and flex.”
Former Olympic champion Kershon Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago also failed to qualify after throwing 79.33 metres.
Naseem Arshad of Pakistan won the Group B contest with 85.16 metres while Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic was second after throwing a season-best of 84.93.
Germany’s Weber Julian also booked a slot in the final set for Saturday, 7th August, after finishing third in the group with an 84.41 metres throw.
