Three police officers were on Thursday charged at a Milimani Court for aiding a suspect to escape from police custody.
The officers based at Kamukunji Police station in Nairobi were each released on a bond of Ksh. 200,000 with one surety of the same amount or an alternative of Ksh. 50,000 cash bail until 4th of June, 2020 when the case will be heard.
The suspects Corporal Vacity Kimeres and Constables Stephen Auko and Elias Koome were arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Thursday morning for allegedly releasing a Ugandan suspect who had been detained for kidnapping a police officer last week.
According to the DCI, the three officers were on duty on 13th, May, 2020 when the kidnap suspect Martin Wasike, 27 disappeared from the cells.
Analysis of the CCTV footage revealed that the trio deliberately, unprocedurally and unlawfully released the Ugandan national who had been charged at Milimani Law Courts alongside two others for kidnapping and handling suspected stolen property.
Elsewhere, police in Kirinyaga County have arrested a university student for posting defamatory statements on Facebook against Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.
According to Kirinyaga County Criminal Investigations officer Bernard Korir, the blogger was arrested on Thursday morning at his Kerugoya home and detained at Kerugoya police station where was detained for questioning before being released on police bond pending the outcome of the investigations.
Korir who was briefing the press in his office said Governor Waiguru had recorded a statement.
He said the investigations file will be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions for directions once investigations are complete.
The DCI officers are analyzing the suspect’s facebook account after he claimed that his account had been hacked by unknown people.
