National Sevens Circuit champions KCB have been crowned the champions of 2022 Kabeberi 7s after beating University side Strathmore Leos 12-10 in a hotly contested battle staged at the RFUEA grounds.
The bankers who have now won the opening round of this year’s National Sevens Circuit had edged out a battling Menengai Oilers 17-12 to set up the Leos, who beat Homeboyz 15-10 in the other semi.
KCB head coach Dennis Mwanja attributed his charges win to composure and good management while his counterpart from
Strathmore Leos coach Louis Kisia was graceful in defeat, saying his team allowed KCB to have possession for long in the first half.
“The defence got tired and that is what bogged us down, but kudos to my players who outdid themselves to reach the final,” said Kisia, adding that the failed conversions also cost them the duel.
“Sevens Series is a marathon and I won’t let that take it away from the boys, who performed well.”
Last season’s Kenya cup finalists Menengai Oilers crushed Homeboyz 26-5 to finish third in the opening leg of the 2022 National Sevens Series.
Hosts and defending Kabeberi 7s champions Mwamba beat Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology 24-5 to finish fifth, while Nondies won the 13th place final after beating Impala Saracens 14-12.
Meanwhile, Nakuru stunned Mwamba 17-15 to lift women’s Kabeberi Sevens title.
With the exception of 2020 and 2021 when sporting activities were hampered by the Covid 19 pandemic, this tournament has been played every year since 1988.
Mwamba and Impala Saracens boast the most wins at Kabeberi, having lifted the title 7 times each while Kenya Harlequin have lifted the cup title at this tournament on 6 occasions.
Defending National Sevens Circuit champions KCB, Nakuru, Homeboyz and the defunct Barclays RFC have won each won 2 titles while Kenya 7s, Ulinzi and Stanchart boast of a title a piece.
