Kenneth Kiprop bags 10,000m title at national championship

Former African champion Kenneth Kiprop posted 28:06.67 seconds to win the men’s 10,000 meters final during the National Athletics Championship at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi.

Kenneth Kiprop representing Western took the lead for the first time with six laps to go having been in a pack of 6 runners who broke away from the rest as Kibet Ndiwa gave chase.

 

 

He further widened the gap with two laps to go and never relented comfortably winning the race ahead of Wesley Kimutai and Abraham Longosiwa who wound up in second and third places respectively.

A total of 46 athletes took part in the race.

Wiseman Were of Kenya DefenceForces claimed a double winning the men’s 400m hurdles and the 110m hurdles after posting 13.89 seconds. Michael Musyoki and William Mbevi posted 14.32 and 14.52 seconds to finish in second and third places respectively.

The national record over the distance of 13.69 Seconds is held by Fathuel Kimaiyo who set it 48 years ago.

Priscilla Tabunda beat her KDF compatriots to win the women’s 100m hurdles final clocking 13.99Seconds qualifying to represent Kenya at the African Championship.

Rukia Nuzra wound up second in 14.70 seconds as Jane Chege posted 14.76seconds to finish third.

Veronica Chebet of National Police Service was placed fifth in 15.39 seconds with Prison’s Glady’s Ngure finishing the race in the fifth position stopping the clock at 15.92 seconds.

Agnes Ngumbi,Faith Chemutai, and Diana Chebet failed to start the race whose Africa Championship qualification mark is 14.00 seconds.

Maximila Imali anchored her national police service team to winning the women’s 4X400M relay final after stopping the clock at 44.95seconds. Prisons finished second with a time of 46.75 seconds while KDF wound up third in 48.23seconds.

 

African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala powered his National Police Service team to victory in the men’s 4X100m men’s final after posting 39.59 seconds as KDF wound up second posting 39.82Seconds while Prisons finished in third place with 39.95seconds

The three-day national championship which has attracted teams from 12 AK member branches and four institutions ends tomorrow with the climax being the naming of the team that will represent Kenya at the forthcoming Africa Athletics Championship due in Mauritius June8th-12th 2022.
