Kenya national men’s football team Harambee Stars has moved up two places in the latest Fifa rankings following the second round of African World Cup Qualifiers.
Coach Engin Firat’s men beat Rwanda 2-1 on Monday, 15th November in a match staged at the Nyayo National Stadium to finish third in Group E with six points.
This is after losing to Mali 1-0 on October 10, followed by a 0-0 draw against neighbours Uganda, leaving the West Africans advancing to the playoff round.
As a result, Stars are now on position 102 globally rising two places from 104. Uganda Cranes still leading in the Cecafa region as they are ranked in position 82.
Senegal remain the top-ranked team in Africa, followed by Morocco Tunisia, Algeria and Nigeria, who are in position 20, 28, 29, 32 and 36 respectively.
Overall, Belgium remain top of the world followed by Brazil, France, England, Argentina and Italy.
Kenya’s rise in Fifa rankings comes when Stars coach Engin Firat on Tuesday, 16th November left the country for Turkey as his job with the national team remains in limbo.
The Turkish tactician was appointed in September as Stars head coach on a two-month deal to replace Jacob “Ghost” Mulee who terminated his contract with the national team.
Speaking on Monday, after Harambee Stars win against Rwanda, Firat expressed his interest to stay with Harambee Stars.
“The team has a future. I am happy with the squad we have here and I wish I could stay and continue rebuilding the team. I said earlier I would leave if there is no future and I have seen a future for Stars. So I would like to stay,” said Firat.
Firat has guided Kenya in four matches, losing twice, drawing once, and winning once.
