Kenya has received an additional 1.8 million doses of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines from Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX), a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines.
The consignment which was donated by the United States government arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and was received by Ministry of Health officials led by the chair of the national task force on vaccines against Covid-19 Dr Willis Akhwale.
Also present at the airport were United States Embassy officials led by Ms Heidi O’bra, Deputy Director, USAID/Kenya, Office of Health, Population, and Nutrition.
While thanking the US government for the donation Dr Akhwale said the vaccines will be distributed to the nine regìonal stores countrywide.
He noted that donation will ensure everyone has equal access to the vaccines and they are safe.
He said reports of limited stocks of Moderna vaccines were true in the county and pointed out that there are ongoing discussions with development partners to get more Moderna vaccines in the country so that there are enough doses of the five compliments being used in the country.
He further noted that the government hopes to fully vaccinate 19 million people by end of June this year and noted that during the same period they have targeted to vaccinate 2.9 million teenagers between 15 and 17 years.
Akhwale further said they target 4.2 million Kenyans who are fully vaccinated received their booster shots by December 2022.
According to the Ministry of Health statistics, as of February 27th, 2022, a total of 16,617,398 vaccines had been administered across the country.
In the last 24 hours, a total of 18,463 vaccines have been administered in the country while the total number of people fully vaccinated in the same period is 13,555.
