Kenya set to host health professionals conference next week

Kenya is next week set to host the inaugural International Conference on the Review and Harmonization of the Curriculum and Training of Health Professionals.

The conference to held from Monday to Wednesday will be officially opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta and brings together delegates from over 99 countries.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Health Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe during the launch of the English language training programme at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Nairobi.

The conference will bring together professional trainers in the private sector, faith-based organizations, the Kenyan government and regional governments to address the future workforce in the health sector.

It will provide an occasion for stakeholders to provide insights on harmonizing the curriculum and training of health care professionals, in the face of rapidly changing country’s and region’s healthcare needs, and to strengthen the capabilities of health professionals to support the Universal Health Coverage agenda.

Key speakers will attend the conference in-person at Sarova White Sands hotel in Mombasa County while other participants will attend virtually in line with the COVID-19 health protocols.

Local, regional and international corporations, medical institutions, trainers and providers will also have an opportunity to showcase their work at exhibition stands during the conference.

“The conference is a major milestone towards health care reforms aimed at strengthening technical and soft skill competencies and will enhance global competitiveness and future job readiness of health professionals,”  Kagwe said. .

The conference provides an opportunity to focus on ways of optimizing the health workforce, enhancing governance in cadre recognition, schemes of service and scope of practice for improved workforce management and retention, as well as formulating regulatory frameworks.
