Kenya Men’s National 15s Rugby team, Simbas head coach Paul Odera has refuted claims of his resignation.

This comes just hours after KRU announced that the head coach stepped down from his head coaching position.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 27th July KRU said: “The Kenya Rugby Union Board has accepted Paul Odera’s resignation from his role as Head Coach of the Kenya Men’s National Fifteens Team, The Simbas.”

“The Kenya Rugby Union would like to extend its sincere thanks to Paul for his exemplary service during his time with the Kenya U20s and most recently, the Simbas. We wish him well in his future pursuits.
The Union did not give reasons to as why Odera stepped down.

However, speaking to Capital Sport, Odera said that he was not aware that the Union was sending out a statement on his resignation.

He further maintained that he’s still on the job as far as he’s concerned.

“I have not resigned and as far as I am concerned I am continuing my preparations with the team for the 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers. I am as surprised as everyone is with the statement,” said Odera.

Odera has been in charge of the Simbas since March 2019 when he was appointed. He took over from the New Zealander Ian Snook who parted ways with KRU after failing to qualify for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Weeks ago Odera had led Kenya Simbas to quarters of the 2022 Rugby Africa Cup which also doubles up as the final qualification for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
