Upgrading of Angama Airstrip at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve on course

The upgrading of Angama airstrip to an International Airport in a bid to directly connect foreign tourists to the world-famous game reserve is on course.

The rehabilitation sponsored by the Government of Kenya through the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is expected to be carried out in three phases before becoming a fully operational international airport with the first phase costing Sh244 million.

Speaking when he led the County Development Implementation Coordination Committee (CDICC) to inspect the ongoing works, Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde asked the contractor to stick to the agreed timelines.

The construction of the first phase that began in December 2021 and is expected to be complete in December 2022 is being undertaken by Ongata Works Limited.

The first phase entails expansion of the existing 1260 meters long runway to 1380 meters and expansion of the width from 18 to 25 meters to facilitate code C aircraft operations.

Also expected to be done in the first phase include construction of 650meters access road, construction of 120 meters by 120 meters apron and two taxiways.

Repainting and fencing of the airport to boost security will also be done in the first phase that is at 15 per cent complete.

In the second phase, the existing runway will be expanded from 1260 meters to 2500 meters length and the width expanded from 23 meters to 30 meters. Also, the second phase will entail construction of a Very Important Person (VIP) lounge.
