A Kenyan bishop operating a church in the United Kingdom has been charged for allegedly selling and advertising a fake Covid-19 cure.

Bishop Climate Wiseman, who was presented at Lavender Hills Magistrates’ Court, was charged with fraud and unfair trading offenses. He admitted not guilty.

The bench heard that the head of Kingdom Church in South London has been selling a mixture of cedarwood and hyssop as “Devine Cleansing Oil”.

The Daily Mail reported that the package, disguised as “Plague Protection Kit”, contained a small bottle and a piece of red yarn.

For a believer to the kit, he/she had to part with Ksh13,719.

According to prosecutor Ryan Thompson, the faith healer assured buyers that the concoction would “treat, prevent, protect against or cure coronavirus”.

He said Wiseman, 46, would explain the benefits of the “bogus cure” in in-person meetings, online services, instructional videos, and testimonial videos.

Thompson told the court that the bishop claimed the oil had healed at least 10 people.

The prosecutors noted that those who bought the oil could be harmed or die, as they think the package can save them.

Defending the clergyman, Maeve Thornton, said his client should not be convicted, as the freedom to practise religion is allowed in the UK.

The magistrates referred the case to the Inner London Crown Court, saying they were not suitable to handle it.

Wiseman will be arraigned again on September 13.
