The Kenyan trio of Hellen Obiri, Agnes Tirop and Lilian Kasait have all progressed to the final of the women’s 5,000m in the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Tirop, the world 10,000m bronze medallist, finished second, clocking 14:48.01, while Kasait came fifth, timing 14:50.36 in the first heat.
The Netherlands ‘ Sifan Hassan won the first heat in 14.47.89 while Ethiopians Senbere Teferi and Ejgayehu Taye finished third and fourth, respectively.
Meanwhile, world champion Obiri finished second in the second heat in a time of 8:12.25.
Obiri’s heat was won by Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia with Italy’s Nadia Battocletti coming third.
The final will take place on Monday, 2nd August. The Kenyans hope to defend the title won by Vivian Cheruiyot five years ago in Rio, Brazil.
