Kenyan truck driver confirmed positive for Covid-19 in Uganda

One Kenyan truck driver who arrived at Malaba border post has tested positive for Covid-19 bringing the total to four in Uganda.

The truck driver is among 651 samples that were tested for the virus.

“The confirmed case is a 32-year-old Kenyan truck driver who arrived at Malaba border post from Kenya. He did not have any signs and symptoms consistent with Covid-19,” said the Uganda Ministry of Health,” said the Director-General Health Services.

The trucker was tested as part of the standard procedure for all cargo transporters in Uganda.

A total of four Kenyan cargo transporters have been confirmed positive for the deadly disease in the last two weeks in Uganda.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) regulations require that every case is counted and treated in a country where it was tested and confirmed.

“Arrangements to evacuate the Kenyan to Entebbe Hospital for treatment are underway,” he added.

Uganda has heightened surveillance on its borders targeting truck drivers entering the region.

On Tuesday, senior Government officials led Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe toured the Malaba border point to inspect the level of preparedness at the busy border point that connects Kenya and Uganda.

The visit coming at a time the country has enhanced surveillance across its borders in an effort to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
