The month-long voter verification exercise launched by the electoral agency comes to an end Thursday at midnight.
The commission has been targeting people who want to change their polling station and Kenyans living in the diaspora.
Since the launch on May 14, voters are required to visit registered centres or IEBC offices in their constituency with their original ID or valid passport that they used to register to cross-check their details.
IEBC also unveiled an online portal and a short message service (SMS) for voters to check their registration status by sending their ID number Year of Birth or Passport Number, Year of Birth to SMS to 70000 or through the portal https://verify.iebc.or.ke/.
In the event one’s details are incorrectly captured, they should visit their registration centre.
The electronic voter verification exercise is being done across the country and in 12 foreign countries: Canada, UAE, United Kingdom, USA, Qatar, South Africa, Germany, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
“The IEBC gives notice that the application for new registration and change in registration of voters in Kenya and for Kenyan citizens living outside the country shall be suspended from May 4, 2022 to March 13, 2023,” said Mr Chebukati.
In a gazette notice, the IEBC announced the suspension of new registration as well as the change of registration of voters both in Kenya and the diaspora from May 4 until March 13, 2023.
Even though the Election Act gives every Kenyan the right to register as a voter 60 days before the election date, IEBC argues that continuing with registration will stall the verification process and affect other critical deadlines before the General Election.
“The commission notifies the pubic that this suspension is to enable the availability of the register of voters to the public for purposes of verification of biometric data and particulars of registered voters in accordance with sections 6A of the Elections Act, 2011,” IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati said.
The end of the verification process paves the way for the gazetting of the final register that will be ready by June 9 to be used in the August 9 elections.
“The voters Register will be ready by 9th of June and the KMPG audit report will also be made public,” said Chebukati.
