Kenyans on social media have ganged up against State House spokesperson Kanze Dena after stating that the government is not to blame for the high cost of living.
According to Kanze, the Russia-Ukraine war is forthrightly at fault, citing challenges in the global supply chain and huge demand for some products like crude oil. Russia is of the oil giants in the world and many countries have placed sanctions on her in attempts to pressure Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine.
The former Citizen TV news anchor noted that the Kenyan economy has been damaged by the conflict and it is not an exclusive problem.
“The rising cost of living is not exclusive to Kenya, it is a global phenomenon fueled by numerous external factors among them the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war which has led to a rise in the global price of petroleum, which is a key factor of production,” she said.
However, netizens were not satisfied with her explanation.
They argued that prices for basic commodities have been soaring in the last few years and the Russian invasion of Ukraine just escalated an already bad situation.
Reactions
Philip Marube: “That’s a simplistic approach to the runaway high cost of living. A caring government will work on intervention measures to cushion its citizens. The government is taxing everything.”
Faaiq Hassan: “She should remain silent. She doesn’t understand what is happening around.”
Teresah Atieno: “She should talk about other things, not the war that hasn’t lasted even two weeks. We were already in an economic quagmire before the war.”
Tobie Mutua: “This is Kanze lying to Kenyans. We are and remain to be informed that even before the war, the cost of living in the country was at its peak.
Amos Kiprop: “Global commodities prices are up, that’s true. However, the government isn’t doing anything to help the normal consumer. The government can subsidize prices of some commodities.”
