There has been a serious transformation of the programs we have on Radio today compared to the 90’s and 80’s.

Whereas in the days of yore we only had one radio station now we have over 200 radio stations.

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation better known as KBC had educative programs throughout. In the morning they would play songs that bash laziness and encourage hardwork while also motivating students to go to school.

Today the morning programs in most of the stations are centered on vulgar topics. It is 80% talk and the music that is played is not encouraging either.

Well, Kenyans took to social media to bash the morning talk shows and called for the concerned authorities to take action before we completely lose it.

These were their sentiments:

@Disembe: There’s need to CLEAN the RADIO trash that Kenyans are treated to on their way to/from work on PSVs. The trash on Classic 105 added to the other “kusoma katiba” trash Jalang’o/Mwakideu treats people every morning is utterly sick. Rubbish on Radio should end.

@Ralphtmk: Stop listening. If they do not have an audience, they do not have a job. Otherwise, freedom of speech man, there are those who LOVE that sh** and it’s their right to listen to the ”trash”. I listen to BBC, never ever local FM stations, there’s nothing for me there.

@HallusaPeter: What about the conmanship where they ask people to send least money in their empesa to win I don’t know bla bla bla or send an sms to a certain number answering a stupid question is very annoying.

@stayhome_ED: Not only in national radio stations Sir, Local radios in the morning air content that should be aired late night. I expected someone with Kiswahili fluency like #alexmwakideu to take one hour and train our kids ‘How to write a good insha” now that some kids can only access radios.

There was a consensus among Kenyans that most of the stations have lost it. Although they also acknowledged that this stations have fans hence the reason the topics are popular.

Perhaps the regulatory bodies should ensure they monitor what is said and advise on the appropriate time the programs should be aired.
