Jubilee Party candidate for the Kiambaa parliamentary by-election Kariri Njama has claimed victory even after the electoral commission declared his main competitor, John Njuguna Wanjiku of United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the winner.

In a press conference this evening, Njama alleged that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) conspired with UDA agents to shortchange him.

A deflated Njama called out the electoral agency for “reversing the will of the people”.

“First and foremost I want to thank the people of the Kiambaa for the support and their votes. We won fair and square, but IEBC went to bed with our rivals.

“I want to make it clear that I don’t agree with the results. There were many irregularities that must be addressed before we move on,” he said.

He revealed that he had decided to seek justice in court.

The politician alleged that results from three polling stations were cooked.

“A recount of votes in Gachie, Kawaida and Karuri polling stations must happen. We can’t allow IEBC to make decisions for the people,” Njama said.

Last night, the contestant together with his agents stormed Karuri main tallying centre and disputed the results.

Chaos erupted for a few minutes before police intervened.

The electoral agency suspended counting of votes, but exercise resumed this morning when Wanjiku was declared the winner.

He garnered 21,773 votes against Njama’s 21,263 votes.
