National
Assembly Majority Leader, Amos Kimunya today made his presence felt in
parliament with a stern warning.
The
Kipipiri MP made it clear that it will not be business as usual, vowing that
any lazy committee member will be kicked out.
“Those
who do not attend the meetings have no business being members of those
committees. They should be removed.
“A
parliamentary Committee member who does not attend four seatings is supposed to
be reported. I will take it up as the Majority Leader. I have a template ready
where the only thing that will change is the name and the date,” Kimunya said.
The newly elected majority leader was the center of attraction when he presented a list of newly elected Parliamentary Committee members to the Parliament that was agreed by all members of parliament.
ODM made its debut at the leadership of various committees that were previously held by Jubilee, including the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee. They are taxed with a role of critical analysis of issues brought before them and making recommendations for actions.
In
accordance with the standing orders, the new Committees have been tasked to coming
up with the various chairs and their vices within a period of not exceeding
seven days to enable smooth and coordinated activities in each committee.
The
lawmaker noted that some of the Committee members were not taking their roles
seriously which ends up affecting the operations of the committee and issued a
stern warning of removing them from those positions through the due process.
The
Speaker of National Assembly Justin Muturi also confirmed that some Members had
been receiving allowances for the meetings that they did not attend and risk
being withdrawn from those Committees.
Both the chair, vice-chair, and ordinary Committee members normally earn a substantial amount of money in the form of allowance per sitting.
