A UK Member of Parliament is the talk of the internet in Kenya after she highlighted the plight of a child whose Kenyan mother was reportedly killed by a British soldier in 2012.

The Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, Jess Philips, was touched following an expose that revealed that Agnes Wanjiru was murdered by a military man under the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (Batuk) in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.

She was particularly concerned after learning that Wanjiru’s daughter, Stacy, has been living in abject together with her aunt, who has been raising her since her mother’s death. The girl was five months when her mother died and now she is almost 10 years.

As a result, she started a crowdfunding initiative to raise money to help the victim’s family.

Within a few days, the campaign, which will close after 17 days, has generated more than Ksh1 million.

“Her name was Agnes Wanjiru, let’s make so her daughter Stacy has a better chance than she did. Let’s show her that here in the UK we can see her,” she wrote on Twitter.

Besides that, Philips, who is an outspoken advocate for women’s welfare, is piling pressure on Britain to investigate the matter transparently.

She asked why the UK’s Ministry of Defence took too long to probe the murder.

“Why is the Defence secretary not concerned immediately with the risk of a possible killer at large. Cover up or no cover-up surely responsibility to safety of citizens overrides embarrassment of how this may have been handled in the past.”

However, Defence Secretary of State Ben Wallace pointed fingers at Kenya for failing to report the matter. He claimed that Kenyan authorities requested for DNA tests to be carried out on the suspects last week.

Wanjiru was murdered in a resort in Nanyuki and her body was dumped in a septic tank. All soldiers who were present at the time will have their DNA samples taken as authorities in both countries take the matter seriously due to the attention it has grabbed globally.

The 21-year-old mother of one was last seen alive with a British soldier after he reportedly paid to sleep with her.
