Kisumu to hold Africities sports tournament in a bid to promote talent

Kisumu County Government, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Sports in partnership with Tourism Limited, has announced that there will be sporting activities on the sidelines of the  9th Africities Summit.

The tournament dubbed ‘2022 Africities Sports Challenge’ will bring together different teams drawn from the local league and from participating cities from Africa.

Paul Mutua, Marketing Director of Sports Tourism Limited, said the main objective is to offer a thrilling sporting experience for the participants and the local residents.

He added that through their partner Teamup Kenya, they would digitize the Africities Sports Challenge, through the Teamup mobile App.

“This way fans can follow the tournament from their mobile phones, including the teams and players,” he explained.

Mutua stated that the App is going to bring a completely new level of experience to the 2022 Africities Sports Challenge.

“It will be a good experience, especially to those who will not manage to attend the Summit and are interested to know what is going on and this will allow the whole world to participate,” he said.

The Sports Challenge will have several sporting categories such as legends, cities and governments, women, junior and corporate all taking part in the Africities Sports Challenge.

Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM), Tourism, Culture, Arts and Sports, Achie Alai, urged local sports teams to register to take part in the big event.

Alai said football clinics would be conducted by sports legends from different countries, local community academies and teams.

“Most of the legends are retired sportsmen and women who have knowledge and skills in this sector, I urge upcoming players to take up the opportunity and interact with them to gain more skills and knowledge, “she cited.

The CECM called upon stakeholders in various industries to take part through sponsorships and partnerships in order to support the success of the initiative.

The continental conference began today and ends on Saturday where 8,000 delegates are expected to attend.
