Senator Kithure Kindiki of Tharaka Nithi boycotted Deputy President William Ruto’s event, which introduced Rigathi Gachagua as Kenya Kwanza’s running mate.

Dr. Ruto’s official residence in Karen was the scene of a major daylong political standoff yesterday after the expected announcement of his running mate failed to materialize, exposing deep divisions within the Kenya Kwanza camp.

The naming of a running mate, which Dr Ruto, the coalition’s presidential aspirant under the UDA flag, had recently described as the “easiest” thing to do, hit snags as Mt Kenya lawmakers debated whether Prof Kindiki or Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua should be chosen.

While Dr Ruto had little trouble settling for Mr Gachagua, a majority of Mt Kenya parliamentarians backed Prof Kindiki, according to sources.

Alternatives to the two were also proposed as potential compromise choices to help resolve the impasse.

Dr Ruto praised Professor Kindiki while unveiling Mr Gachagua, alluding to his absence without providing an explanation.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to my lawyer and friend Abraham Kithure Kindiki, who came in second. Despite the fact that the current senator of Tharaka Nithi is no longer with us, he brought a lot of passion to this contest,” Dr Ruto said.

Those who support Kindiki describe as calm, collected, and soft-spoken demeanor will complement Dr. Ruto’s forceful personality and that he can be a calming influence in government.

Prof Kindiki, from Tharaka in the Meru region, was seen as a response to Mt Kenya East’s historical grievance against their Mt Kenya West neighbours.

The region, which has voted with their Central Kenyan cousins, has long complained that they have gotten the short end of the stick.
