Kenya Premier League record champions Gor Mahia continued with its dominance over local arch-rivals AFC Leopards after beating them 6-5 through penalty shootouts to win Madaraka day exhibition match staged at Nyayo national stadium on Wednesday.
The 95th Mashemeji derby had ended 1-1 during regulation time after former Tusker FC defender Collins Shivachi scored for Ingwe before K’Ogalo levelled during the second half following defensive error from Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo.
The game which was presided over by Cabinet Secretary for Sports Dr Amina Mohamed saw the winnners Gor Mahia take home Sh1 million, while AFC Leopards received Sh500,000.
The tie whose entry was free of charge for fans came three weeks after the top flight return leg which was played at Kasarani stadium ended in a 1-1 draw.
Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards had met 94 times with K’Ogalo winning 33 encounters and AFC Leopards securing 28 victories. The other 29 clashes have ended in draws.
AFC Leopards have not beaten Gor Mahia in the last six years. In this season’s league, Gor Mahia won the first leg 1-0, while the second leg ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
