Residents of Kitengela Town in Kajiado County on Thursday morning (June 25) destroyed remains of a Ksh9 million bridge that had collapsed two days after it was launched for use.
The bridge linking Kitengela and Noonkopir townships caved in, with locals claiming that the contractor, Jesoma Constructors, used poor building materials and employed poor workmanship in the construction.
Angered by
the developments, irate residents on Thursday morning embarked on completely
destroying the collapsed bridge, while calling for quality work to be done on
the facility.
They said
the contractor covered the bridge with cotton soil after applying a thin layer
of concrete material on the metal bars.
“The
contractor should face the law for wasting taxpayers’ money,” said one of the
residents.
Kitengela
MCA, Francis Kaesha, said he would ensure the contractor is disciplined for the
shoddy work.
Kajiado County minister for roads, Alex Kilowua, told K24 Digital the contractor, who constructed the bridge, was relieved of the task two weeks ago.
“We will bring in another contractor in one week’s time to redo the bridge. I laud members of the public for keeping contractors on their toes,” said Kilowua.
