Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has intensified efforts aimed at improving infrastructure networks at Gigiri in Nairobi county ahead of the upcoming United Nations twin international events.

Kenya is set to host the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) @50 and the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in March this year.

“Preparations are at an advanced stage and we can say it’s all systems go.Our teams have been pitching camp around the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi and the existing road networks have been elevated to bitumen standards ahead of the global event” noted KURA Director General Silas Kinoti

Kinoti was speaking on Friday on the sidelines of an inspection exercise of the ongoing Dualling of Eastern Bypass which is aimed to reduce traffic congestion between JKIA and Thika road once complete.

The historic 50th Anniversary shall be held at the headquarters in Gigiri, even as the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MEF) Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo reiterates that ‘One Government Approach’ will be adopted in planning and organising for the historic event.

Dr. Kiptoo noted that the UNEP @50 conference in particular, gives Kenya an opportunity to showcase its environmental milestones in matters afforestation, sequestration and reduction on carbon emissions by using clean energy strategies, waste management home-bred technologies among others.

The fifth United Nations Environment Assembly will be followed by a special session, called UNEP@50, to be held 3 – 4 March 2022, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The special session will be held under the overall theme of “Strengthening UNEP for the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

UNEP@50 is a time to reflect on the past and envision the future. It provides an opportunity to reinvigorate international cooperation and spur collective action to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
