The first edition of Captain Ruweida Cup will enter its penultimate stage when teams battle each other for honours at the Mbwajumwali ground in Lamu East constituency.

According to Lamu county Woman Representative Ruweida Obo,the theme of the competition played at every village level is Say No to Drugs with its ultimate goal being to form a strong constituency team that will compete in sanctioned leagues in Kenya.

“I have walked around and realised we have massive potential on the ground but talent of these boys just got wasted through involvement in activities that dont matter like drug abuse which we seek to eradicate amongst our youth.

” I have been in touch with several clubs like Bandari FC and Vihiga Queens and our boys and girls will get enough exposure playing out against them” she said.

For over 100 years, Lamu County has been attracting tens of thousands of Muslims from all over the world for the annual Maulid festivities to celebrate the birth of prophet Mohammad.

At this celebrations, donkey and horse racing, athletics, football and cultural competitions take place with over 20 teams participating.

It is, however, sad to note that no consideration has ever been made to construct a stadium in Lamu that could used by the youth to nurture their talents.

“Once elected Lamu East MP I would take my proposal to the national Government on how they can help us have our well equipped playing facilities to help our young people who are passionate about sports train and play .We would also work with local county government on the improvement of what we currently have” she further added.

Lamu has over 20 football clubs that are forced to use pitches in deplorable conditions.

These are the pitches that have produced stars like Ali Kombo, Hussein Langra and Nahodha Ali who have all featured in the Kenyan Premier league in the past.
