Argentine superstar Lionel Messi could not hide his tears as he officially announced his exit from Barcelona after 21 years at the Spanish club.

The 34-year-old soccer wizard became a free agent upon the expiry of his final contract at Barca in June. He was unable to extend his Nou Camp contract, amid a financial crisis at the club.

Speaking at his farewell press conference at Camp Nou on Sunday, 8th August, a tearful Messi said he had never imagined saying goodbye to the club he loved most.

“My family and I were convinced we were going to stay here, at home. This is the end with this club and now a new story will begin. Yes, it’s one of the most difficult moments for me,” Messi was quoted by BBC Sport, as saying.

“I don’t want to leave this club – it’s a club I love and this is a moment I didn’t expect.”Last year, I wanted to leave, this year I wanted to stay. That’s why I’m so sad. It was like my blood ran cold. I was really sad. It was really difficult right up to now. I’m still trying to process it all.”

Messi, who joined Barca at the age of 13, played 778 official games, scoring 672 goals and providing 305 assists.

He won the league title with Barcelona 10 times, won the Champions League four times, and the Spanish Cup seven times. He was also named World Footballer of the Year six times.

According to media reports, French giants PSG appear the most likely next destination for the Argentine soccer genius.
