While the topic “SEX” remains taboo in most African societies, some celebrities have found a different way of freedom to express themselves despite the stigmatization that comes in handy.

To put the cards on the table, the African Society has never been welcoming for different people with “peculiar” sexual orientation such as the gays, by the fact that there have been numerous legal battles and parliament bills which have been thrown out due to the perception it goes along with.

However, a section of celebrities have expressed altruism and have come out to speak their sexual inclination, enduring public ridicule.

Here is a list of celebrities who came out as LGBTQIA+ in 2021.

1. Makena Njeri

The ex Tahidi High actress and BBC journalist openly confessed that she was gay and it was hard to cope with the societal norms that it was prohibited.

She says that she does not regret coming out as one, as it helped her understand herself way better than before when she was struggling to live a normal life.

“I remember for the first time in my life after very many years looking at myself in the mirror and I said to myself, I am gay, I am unique and this is my truth.”

She recently hit the headlines when she broke up with her girlfriend Michelle Ntalami.

She is now in an open relationship with media personality Kaz Karen Lucas.

1. Silas Miami

He is the son of veteran journalist Louis Otieno.

Silas took to social media to announce his sexual orientation when he posted that he was married to a man called Patrick, and even went ahead to praise him as a loving and caring partner.

“I met and married someone just under a year ago. He’s got all the things: kindness, courage, honesty, etc. But, while why all this is all fine and great, that is not why I married him,” he said.

“In fact, neither of us believed in marriage. We still don’t. But after months of us looking at options for what companionship would look like, especially seeing as travel isn’t exactly easy for us, we settled on going for it.

3. Noti Flow

The famed Kenyan musician, known for her shaggy acts in the music videos revealed that she was LGBTQIA+ five years ago when she released a music video in support of the gay community. The video was banned by the former Kenya Films and Classification Board (KFCB) boss Ezekiel Mutua.

In an interview, the rapper came out clean as bisexual and said that she could fall in love with either males or females.

“My first encounter was with a girl at 19 years. I have dated girls but also men. Love comes in many ways and it doesn’t necessarily have to be specific with a man or a woman. Love does not discriminate. I have loved a man and also loved a woman,” she said.

“A girl broke my virginity, which was a lovely experience, but my first encounter with a man was painful and hard. It took two weeks for me to heal.”

She is currently in a relationship with public figure King Alami.

4. Brenda Jons

The 24-year-old creative came out as a lesbian in September, during one of her live recordings where she introduced her girlfriend and even kissed.

“By the way guys, I’m telling you for sure, I am very gay. This is my girlfriend,” she said.

5. Willis Chimano

He is a musician in the popular band, Sauti Sol.

In an interview with a local publication, Chimano stated that he could not hide anymore and thus decided to speak out during a tour while promoting his solo project dubbed “Friday Feeling”.

“It is the first time I am expressing myself in a song. You get to know who Chimano is and that is a heavy crown to carry. It is just a representation of the underground ballroom culture within the queer community, which I am part of.”

“So, I am just laying everything bare. From now on, hakuna kujificha jificha. Sexuality does not define you. It is just about me putting myself out there, my creativity, and living my truth. Figure out what your happiness is most importantly with yourself. Gather your own life.”

Chimano says that he has learned to get along with criticism from his fans online.
