Locals Pressure Government to Pay River Enziu Victims’ Families

Locals of Nguni Ward have called on the Government to compensate families of 32 victims that lost their lives at the River Enziu tragedy that occurred on December 4, 2021.

Through their Member of County Assembly (MCA), Jeffason Kiruru Ngui, they blamed the Government for negligence after failing to repair the bridge despite making promises.

“Almost two weeks after the accident, nothing has been done at the River Enziu crossing. We expected boulders placed there and signs erected to warn motorists and other bridge users,” Ngui said.

“We have been told that an overhead bridge will be built. The crossing is worst than it was before the tragedy. Something should have been done to improve it.” He added.

The MCA was speaking during the burial of four Ndungu siblings, at Ndooni village, who are among 32 victims that perished after a school bus they were traveling in overturned and slid into River Enziu.

The company that built the Enziu bridge and government officials that oversaw the processing of the contract are set to face court action following the tragedy.

Further, the locals have urged Kenya Rural Roads Authority (Kerra) Director-General, Mwangi Maingi, to disclose details of the contract of River Enziu bridge construction.

They want to know how the contract was awarded and the amount of money given to the contractor who failed to build a standard bridge as they accuse Kerra officials of failing to supervise the work as per the bill of quantities to account for their negligence.

Additionally, the residents requested Kerra to issue public copies of the contract signed between the Government and the company that undertook the construction with an indication on why the payment was done after shoddy work.

“We shall appreciate receiving the information within seven days”
