Luce Douady, French climber dies after she fell off cliff in Grenoble

– It is believed she slipped nearly 150 metres off the cliff while in the company of her friends

– The 16-year-old was in line to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021

Promising French climber and Olympic hopeful Luce Douady has tragically died following a 150 metres fall off a cliff.

Douady is said to have been heading to a yet to be explored sector of a cliff in the French Alps on Sunday, June 14.

SunSport reports it is believed the teenage sensation was crossing between two climbing areas near the city of Grenoble during the tragic incident.

Douady, a reigning world junior champion, was hoping to make an appearance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

While confirming her death, the French Mountain Climbing Federation mourned her as “brilliant” and “promising”.

“Luce was a young athlete on the French climbing team, very promising. Brilliant in competition,” thet federation said.

Julia Chanourdie, a fellow French climber, also paid a tribute to the teenager who started climbing at a tender age alongside her father.

“I will remember her with incredible energy and motivation, clearly nothing could stop her, she was an example to follow despite her young age. It’s unfair,” Julia mourned.

Douady finished fifth on her senior debut at the Bouldering World Cup in Colorado.
