Malala: Mudavadi Must Deputise Ruto or We Leave Kenya Kwanza

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has thrown another spanner in the works as the Kenya Kwanza Alliance begins its search for the right person to play second fiddle.

While it is common knowledge that Deputy President William Ruto will be the coalition’s presidential torchbearer, the position of running mate is causing a big headache.

Barely hours after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) endorsed the DP to run for President, Malala is of the view that the deputy presidency must be a preserve for the Amani National Congress (ANC).

The lawmaker asserted that UDA cannot nominate the top positions yet the formation is made up of other parties like ANC and Ford-Kenya of Moses Wetangula.

“We have seen William Ruto being interviewed by UDA just before he was approved to run for the presidency. The same should apply when selecting his running mate under Kenya Kwanza,” he said.

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua being one of those widely mentioned as a potential candidate to deputise Ruto, Malala said he should face off with Mudavadi in an interview.

He added that the former Finance Minister is an experienced politician and no formula can put Rigathi ahead of him.

“Musalia and Rigathi must appear before a panel so that we see who understands the matter of the economy better. It is obvious Musalia will carry the day.

“Who is Gachagua? Musalia has held different positions in government and his track record is known. As ANC, our irreducible minimum is the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.

A fortnight ago, Rigathi sparked a storm in Kenya Kwanza after claiming that Mudavadi has agreed that Ruto’s running mate will be picked from Mt Kenya.

ANC rubbished the claim, describing the Mathira MP as a tribal leader.
