Though she is believed to wield unparalleled power and a common subject in Kenya’s political area, former First Lady and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta has found a way of operating behind the scenes and speaking only when necessary.

Last week while campaigning in Ichaweri village, the ancestral home of Mama Ngina whose husband was founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto invoked the name of the Kenyatta Family matriarch.

In what was seen as a desperate move by the DP to try and reconcile with his boss, he asked the President to flashback and remember the old, good days when his mother would pray for them to capture power. The Head of State and his deputy fell out and their former bromance looks broken beyond repair.

Perhaps that is what has triggered Mama Ngina to make a rare public speech and decided to deliver it in the Kikuyu language.

Speaking during a funeral ceremony of her cousin, she said the second in command was at fault for his frosty relationship with the President.

“Uhuru did not have a problem with his deputy. Ruto disrespected his boss, who decided there was no need to keep the relationship,” she said.

The post-independence First Lady also condemned allies of the DP for insulting her.

“That’s how they were taught by their parents. We will just ignore those verbally abused others; I think it is how they were raised,” she said.

The Tangatanga camp has been claiming that the President’s mother is controlling her son and using her influence in government to make bad economic decisions for Kenya.

In addition, Mama Ngina advised the Kikuyu Community to rally behind ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential candidature as her son has been imploring Kenyans.

“We must unite as a country. Just know that your kingpin (Uhuru) cannot mislead you. Uhuru knows what is good and bad for Kenya.”
