The Mwingi man whose selfie with the three terror convicts who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison has opened up on how he managed to corner the fugitives.
The man, identified as Paul Mwaniki stated that he spotted the trio at Endau Malalani Ward as they searched for their way to Somalia through Boni Forest.
Mwaniki pointed out that the three looked weary and hungry as they had traveled over 160 kilometers from Nairobi to a remote village in Kitui County. He wondered how the convicts had managed to evade police officers and roadblocks on various highways since the police had enhanced security in the country following their prison break.
The villager noted that the three looked skeptical judging by their mode of walking. He stated that they walked in a zig-zag manner to cover up their footsteps.
“They walked in some sneaky way creating a zig-zag formation. It involved crossing the road from one point to another. They also seemed to avoid any contact with other residents compelling them to walk through thorny bushes,” he narrated.
He added that they also walked in the thorny bushes beside the main road to avoid getting lost. This was also a move to keep them away from the eyes of the locals who they knew could signal the police especially since the Government had told Kenyans to stay alert and report any cases of suspicion.
“They walked in the shrubs but closer to the road to avoid getting lost. They were not aware of the roads in the area, they were clearly visitors. We noticed them immediately they set their feet in Endau Malalani Ward. I am wondering if they were ferried in a vehicle or an alternative means to get here,” he stated.
Satisfied that the trio were the wanted escapees, Mwaniki approached them in a neutral manner that made him create a good relationship with the convicts. He then took a selfie which he took to the law enforcement team which acted immediately by pursuing the three.
In collaboration with the officers, they managed to apprehend one criminal as the two temporarily fled into the forest where they were caught minutes later and arrested.
“We as loyal citizens have done all we had to do to apprehend them. We did not feel threatened or in any danger. What we feared is war they could have caused from outside. We also learned that when they escaped from the highly guarded prison in the country, they did not have any weapons,” he added
Joseph Juma, Musharraf Abdalla, and Mohammed Abdi are the three fugitives who were on the run after a jailbreak where they dislodged a brick, made ropes from old blankets and scaled the high perimeter walls then tried to make their way to Somalia, a dream which fell short since they were flown to Nairobi to answer to their charges.
