A man was fatally shot on Friday, 30th July, after he allegedly invaded the rural home of Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchui in Tigania East and tried to attack his workers.
The victim, Morris Mutuma, reportedly entered the residence and threatened the employees with a machete.
The armed guard manning the mansion begged him to surrender the weapon, but he remained adamant.
“I saw police approaching and I pleaded with him to leave the workers alone. I cautioned him that he risked being arrested yet he has a young family,” a witness was quoted by Kenyans.co.ke, as saying.
The tangle ended in the man being shot in the head. He died on the spot.
The incident sparked protests outside the deputy governor’s home, with local residents accusing the guards of using unreasonable force to restrain the man, who was a boda boda rider.
The angry demonstrators said the sentries should have tried other ways to control the man.
“Our son, a boda boda rider, was drunk. Why did the police not try to restrain him or shoot him in the legs or arms?” a villager asked.
Police collected the body from the scene after dispersing the enraged mob.
Ntuchui said he was away during the incident.
